Answers from TravallamaINS, a licensed independent travel insurance agency, to common questions about this. Benefits, limits and conditions differ by plan and by state, and the plan document governs.
How much medical coverage do the plans include?
Emergency medical limits per person:
Travel Insured: Deluxe $250,000; Platinum $500,000; New York plan $100,000.
Trawick: Pathway Plus $100,000; Pathway Premier $200,000.
WorldTrips: Explore $150,000; Elevate $250,000; New York Preferred $100,000; New York Premier $150,000.
The benefit covers a sickness or injury that happens during the trip. Care after you return home is not covered.
Will the plan pay the hospital directly, or do I pay and claim?
For routine care you usually pay and then file a claim with your receipts. For a hospital admission, call the plan's 24/7 assistance line right away: it can verify your benefits with the hospital, and Travel Insured states its assistance provider will arrange advance payment for a hospital admission.
Keep every bill, receipt and medical report.
What is medical evacuation and how does it work?
Medical evacuation pays to transport you to the nearest suitable hospital, or home, when a physician and the plan's assistance company determine that adequate care is not available where you are.
It must be approved and arranged in advance by the plan's 24/7 assistance company. If you arrange it yourself, the plan may pay only part of the cost, or nothing.
Limits: Travel Insured Deluxe $500,000, Platinum and New York plan $1,000,000; Trawick Pathway Plus $350,000, Premier $1,000,000; WorldTrips Explore $750,000, Elevate and New York plans $1,000,000.
Can I be flown home to my own hospital?
Only when it is medically necessary and approved by the assistance company. Evacuation is first to the nearest suitable hospital.
Travel Insured Deluxe and Platinum include Hospital of Choice within the evacuation benefit.
WorldTrips Elevate covers evacuation to a hospital of your choice; on Explore it is an optional upgrade that also raises the limit to $2,000,000.
Trawick's Florida and California versions allow transportation to your hospital of choice once you are stable enough, if arranged by the assistance company.
The New York versions of Trawick and WorldTrips have no hospital-of-choice provision.
Is pregnancy covered?
For medical benefits, normal pregnancy and childbirth are excluded on most plans, while complications of pregnancy are covered.
For trip cancellation it depends on the plan:
Travel Insured Deluxe and Platinum and WorldTrips Atlas Journey list pregnancy as a cancellation reason only if it begins after your coverage takes effect.
Trawick's Florida plans do not list pregnancy as a cancellation reason.
Are dental emergencies covered?
Yes, with a small limit inside the medical benefit: $750 on Travel Insured, WorldTrips and Trawick Pathway Premier, and $500 on Trawick Pathway Plus.
On Travel Insured and Trawick it applies to treatment for an accidental injury to natural teeth. WorldTrips covers emergency dental treatment. Routine dental care is not covered.
Are sports and activities like skiing or scuba diving covered?
It depends on the plan, your state's version and the activity.
Trawick Pathway (Florida and California versions): what it calls adventure sports, including downhill skiing, snorkeling, zip-lining, scuba and resort-sponsored activities, are excluded unless you add the optional Adventure Sports upgrade; extreme sports need the separate Extreme Sports upgrade. The New York version offers no upgrade.
WorldTrips Explore and Elevate: adventure sports are excluded unless you add the Adventure Sports upgrade; extreme sports stay excluded.
Travel Insured Deluxe and Platinum: adventure or extreme activities such as skydiving, heli-skiing and scuba deeper than 131 feet are excluded from medical coverage. Only Platinum offers an Extreme Sports Medical upgrade. The Illinois version has no such medical exclusion.
Travel Insured New York plan: excludes activities such as skydiving, heli-skiing, mountaineering and scuba deeper than 120 feet, with no upgrade.
Check the definitions in your own plan document for your activity.
What happens if someone dies during the trip?
The plans include repatriation of remains, which pays to return the body home. It must be authorized and arranged by the plan's 24/7 assistance company, so call that number first.
The plans also include an accidental death and dismemberment benefit: $10,000 on Travel Insured and Trawick, $25,000 on WorldTrips Explore, and $50,000 on Elevate.
What if I lose my prescription medication on the trip?
Call the plan's 24/7 assistance line for help arranging a replacement. The cost of the medication itself is generally not reimbursed: prescribed medications are listed as not covered under the baggage benefit on Travel Insured and Trawick's Florida plans.
A doctor visit needed only to replace a prescription is not described as a covered medical expense; a new sickness or injury during the trip is.
