What travel insurance covers

Answers from TravallamaINS, a licensed independent travel insurance agency, to common questions about this. Benefits, limits and conditions differ by plan and by state, and the plan document governs.

What does travel insurance cover?

Our trip protection plans combine several benefits in one plan: trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical, medical evacuation, travel delay, missed connection, and lost or delayed baggage.

  • Before you leave: trip cancellation reimburses prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you cancel for a reason the plan lists.
  • During the trip: interruption, delay, medical, evacuation and baggage benefits apply.
  • Optional upgrades such as Cancel for Any Reason and rental car damage are available on some plans.

Limits differ by plan. Each plan card on our site shows its benefits and has a View Plan Documents button.

Is travel insurance worth it?

It matters most when a lot of your trip is prepaid and non-refundable, or when you travel abroad where your health plan may pay little or nothing.

  • A holiday program, cruise or tour paid months ahead can be lost entirely if someone gets sick the week before.
  • Emergency medical care and medical evacuation abroad can be very expensive.

Whether it is worth it for you is your decision. A quote takes about a minute at travallamains.com and shows the exact price for your trip.

What is the difference between trip cancellation and trip interruption?

Trip cancellation applies before you leave; trip interruption applies after your trip has started.

  • Cancellation: reimburses up to 100% of your insured prepaid, non-refundable trip cost when you cancel for a covered reason.
  • Interruption: reimburses the unused part of the trip plus extra transportation to get home or rejoin the trip. The schedule limit is 150% of the insured trip cost on most of our plans (125% on Trawick Pathway Plus).

Some plan documents also say the payment cannot exceed what you prepaid, so the amount above 100% is for the added transportation.

What is a covered reason?

A covered reason is one of the specific events listed in the plan document, such as an unforeseen sickness, injury or death of a traveler or family member. Standard cancellation and interruption benefits pay only for those listed events.

The event must be unforeseen and must happen after your coverage begins. A reason that is not on the list (for example, changing your mind) can be reimbursed only in part, and only under a Cancel for Any Reason upgrade if you bought one and meet its conditions.

Doesn't my credit card already cover this?

Some credit cards include trip cancellation or delay benefits. Check your card's guide to benefits for its per-trip limit, the covered reasons, whether it includes emergency medical and evacuation coverage, and whether the whole trip must be charged to that card.

A trip protection plan includes emergency medical and evacuation benefits and, if bought in time, a waiver of the pre-existing condition exclusion and the option of Cancel for Any Reason.

Doesn't my health insurance or Medicare cover me abroad?

Check with your own health plan before you travel: many U.S. health plans pay little or nothing outside the country, and Medicare states that it generally does not cover health care outside the United States.

Our plans include emergency medical coverage during the trip and medical evacuation.

Which insurance companies and plans do you offer?

We offer trip protection plans from three insurance programs: Travel Insured International, Trawick International and WorldTrips.

  • Travel Insured: Worldwide Trip Protector Deluxe and Platinum (New York residents: Worldwide Trip Protector NY).
  • Trawick: Pathway Plus and Pathway Premier.
  • WorldTrips: Atlas Journey Explore and Elevate (New York residents: Atlas Journey Preferred and Premier).

Enter your trip at travallamains.com to see the plans and prices available in your state.

What is the difference between the plans?

The plans differ mainly in benefit limits, time-sensitive deadlines and optional upgrades. In each pair, the second plan has higher limits.

  • Travel Insured Deluxe vs Platinum: medical $250,000 vs $500,000; evacuation $500,000 vs $1,000,000; delay benefits start after 6 hours vs 3 hours.
  • Trawick Pathway Plus vs Premier: medical $100,000 vs $200,000; interruption 125% vs 150%; only Premier offers Cancel for Any Reason.
  • WorldTrips Explore vs Elevate: medical $150,000 vs $250,000; evacuation $750,000 vs $1,000,000; only Elevate offers Interruption for Any Reason.

The plan cards on our site show each plan's benefits side by side with the price for your trip.

Which plan do you recommend?

It depends on your trip, so we cannot say which plan is best for you without your details. As a general guide, two plans are marked as our recommendations on the plan cards: Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector Deluxe (best overall plan and price) and Trawick Pathway Premier (pre-existing condition coverage).

  • Deluxe pays trip cancellation up to $50,000 per person. For a higher trip cost, look at Platinum (up to $150,000 per person).
  • New York residents who want an upgrade for cancellations outside the listed reasons: the WorldTrips Atlas Journey plans offer Cancel for Fortuitous Reasons.

For a personal recommendation, send us your trip through Request a personal quote and a licensed agent will reply, usually the same business day.

Who is the insurance company behind each plan?

Each plan is underwritten by a licensed insurance company named in the plan document, and that company pays the claims.

  • Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector: United States Fire Insurance Company (a Crum & Forster company).
  • Trawick Pathway: Technology Insurance Company, Inc. or Wesco Insurance Company (AmTrust Financial companies), depending on your state.
  • WorldTrips Atlas Journey: U.S. Specialty Insurance Company.

TravallamaINS is the agency, not the insurer.

What is not covered?

Every plan lists exclusions in its plan document. Common ones across our plans are:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions, unless you qualify for the waiver.
  • War and acts of war.
  • Intentionally self-inflicted injury.
  • Being intoxicated or under the influence of drugs not prescribed by a physician.
  • Certain adventure or extreme sports and professional sports.
  • Normal pregnancy and childbirth for medical benefits; routine or elective care.

Standard cancellation also does not pay for changing your mind or fear of traveling, because those are not listed reasons. The list differs by plan and state, so read the Exclusions section of your plan document.

Is there a deductible?

The plans we offer show no deductible on trip cancellation or emergency medical benefits in the documents we reviewed. Trawick Pathway lists a $0 deductible for medical and baggage.

The exception is the optional rental car damage upgrade on WorldTrips Atlas Journey, which has a $250 deductible.

Is the medical coverage primary or secondary?

Primary coverage pays first without sending the bill through your other insurance; secondary (excess) coverage pays what your other insurance does not.

  • Travel Insured Deluxe and Platinum: benefits are paid on a primary basis (rental car damage is the exception).
  • Travel Insured New York plan: trip cancellation, interruption, delay and baggage are excess of other insurance; medical and evacuation are not listed as excess.
  • WorldTrips Atlas Journey: the schedule labels emergency medical as primary. The New York plan wording confirms it; the Explore and Elevate general provisions say coverage is excess of other insurance except baggage.
  • Trawick Pathway: the Florida document does not use the words primary or secondary for medical; the New York version is secondary to other insurance.

If this matters for your choice, ask a licensed agent to confirm it for your plan and state before you buy.

Is COVID covered?

The plan documents we reviewed do not mention COVID-19 by name, and none excludes epidemics or pandemics from the cancellation or medical benefits. A COVID illness would be assessed under the same sickness rules as any other illness, and the insurance company decides each claim.

  • A physician must certify that the sickness prevents you from traveling.
  • Quarantine ordered by a government authority or physician is a listed cancellation reason on several plans.
  • Fear of catching an illness, or a border closing, is not a covered reason.

Can I insure a trip within the United States?

Yes. Our plans cover domestic and international trips.

One condition to know: WorldTrips Atlas Journey requires the trip to take you 100 miles or more from home.

How long a trip can I insure?

It depends on the plan. Trawick Pathway covers trips up to 90 days (Florida version) and WorldTrips Atlas Journey covers trips up to 180 days.

Travel Insured's documents do not state a maximum trip length, but its sickness medical benefit applies to trips of 180 days or less (90 days on the New York plan).

Is there an age limit?

The plan documents we reviewed do not state a maximum age, and the price depends on each traveler's age.

Enter each traveler's date of birth at travallamains.com and the quote will show which plans are offered and at what price.
